Juan F. Villarreal, Managing Director of Villarreal Energy, LLC, is an international operations and business development executive who has held leading roles in nuclear and fossil power generation and the oil and gas industries. Juan’s strategic approach, coupled with diverse personal experiences, has enabled him to move fluidly between different cultures and business climates to achieve growth for a variety of businesses in the energy sector. Juan speaks five languages and has lived and worked in Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia.
Juan was born in the U.S. while his father, a former president of Ecopetrol, the oil company of the country of Colombia, was studying for his Ph.D. Raised in Latin America, Juan received his bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from Kansas State University. He followed this with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. These were the stepping stones for an international career spanning three continents.
Juan’s professional career began at GE Nuclear performing nuclear power plant start-ups in the U.S. and Europe. While in Europe he was hired by Carlo Gavazzi, an Italy-based international EPC company to manage construction projects for nuclear and geothermal plants. He rejoined GE as the Nuclear Services Manager for nuclear plants in Switzerland.
He then led several businesses at GE in roles such as General Manager, Mexico, Sales for New Gas & Steam Turbines; regional Six Sigma Master Black Belt; General Manager O&M, Multi-Vendor Services Global Marketing & Commercial Director and as Global Power Generation Segment Director.
In a recent role, he worked with small modular reactor (SMR) technology at Babcock & Wilcox Nuclear Energy as Director of Commercial Operations and then Director of Operational Excellence for the Projects and Services business.
As VP of International Business at PIC GROUP, a Marubeni energy services company, Juan worked to penetrate new markets with the company's products. With strong connections in the energy global marketplace, Juan accelerated customer acceptance, offering high level access to OEMs and utility companies around the world.
In his role as Senior Program Manager, O&M at Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Juan lead a team engaged in developing technology in the areas of sensors, monitoring & diagnostics, analytics, advanced control, digital worker and cyber security in support of operations and maintenance for thermal and renewable power generation.
Most recently, as a senior consultant at Booz-Allen Hamilton in the cybersecurity sector, Juan worked to pair energy and power generation businesses with cybersecurity tools to create robust solutions for protecting the grid, power plants, energy transmission and industrial controls systems.
